If you are the proud owner of a brand new boat, you are probably eager to begin your maiden voyage. But before you can set sail for adventure, there is the small matter of safely launching your boat off the ramp. Launching your boat can seem daunting at first, but the following tips from Dalton Marine can help you get underway.
If you are still searching for that new boat, head to Dalton Marine! We have a wide variety of models in stock at our locations in Dalton, GA, and Acworth, GA.
Practice Makes Perfect
Just like learning to drive, you can practice launching your boat in an empty parking lot. When practicing, stay between the lines to get comfortable backing up your trailer through narrow dock lanes. You could also use traffic cones to mark off the line where you need to stop. Continue practicing until you can consistently stop at the designated point.
Take the time to establish some hand signals with your partner, figure out to turn the wheel, and determine whether you are going to use the mirrors or look over your shoulder. Choose whatever approach feels best, and keep on practicing until you feel ready for the big time.
Set Up for Success
Prepare your boat for a smooth launch as soon as you arrive at the marina. First, make sure to load your boat with all the gear you need. Then remove the rear tie-down straps, put the key in the ignition, and lower the outdrive or motor. This will minimize your time spent on the ramp, and other boaters are sure to appreciate your preparedness!
Back Up Safely
When it comes time to back up your boat, ask a crew member to help you. Reverse your trailer far enough that the stem of your vessel touches the water, taking care not to flood the tailpipe of your tow vehicle. Your partner can signal you when you are in the correct position. Then, without turning off your boat, engage the parking brake. Your partner can then unhook the safety chain and detach the boat from the trailer.
Now you can pull your vessel forward, allowing your boat to slide into the water. Congratulations! You are now underway.
